Apparently, there is a meme going around showing Emmett Till’s body saying “Women do lie about rape” to defend Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh.
Okay, there is a lot wrong with this and it s triggering for me.
As a Black man, one of the many things I have to worry about is false rape accusations. These things happen, especially when we are involved with white women. People’s lives have been ruined, taken, and entire towns have been destroyed because a white woman accused a Black man of rape. Till was killed just for interacting with a white woman. I never forget that. However, using Till’s death to forward narrative that Kavanaugh is innocent is wrong and absolutely disgusting. It hurts my heart that people are propping up a death of a young Black boy to defend a man who could potentially be a disaster for this country. A man who believes that race should not play a factor in college admissions. A man who doesn’t believe in Affirmative Action.
A couple days ago I saw a similar post by conservative writer Candace Owens who echoed the same sentiment. At first I saw some similarities to the comparison, but writer César Vargas pulled my coat to it and explained why this is a bad comparison.
Look, I have mixed feelings about the Kavanaugh/Ford accusations. I dislike that we are “getting up” for a white woman when Black and other non-white women’s accusations are ignored. It burns me that we are once again coming together to fight a fight when I know it will not be reciprocated. Nevertheless, I believe Mrs. Ford. Don’t get caught up in this crap that people are pushing like I did. Emmett Till’s death should never be used as a prop for a man who has prob sexually assaulted not only Dr. Ford, but other women. Look at it from the bigger picture here.
